On Sunday, September 29th, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM members from the Aylus Roslyn Branch volunteered at the JCC Stronger than Cancer 5k. The JCC Stronger than Cancer 5k is the largest fundraiser for SJJCC’s Nancy Marx Cancer Wellness Center and ensures that personalized services remain free for all cancer patients and their caregivers. This 5k brings people together to support those affected by cancer.
When we arrived, our first task was to ensure that all the runners were well prepared for the 5k by providing them with nutritious food. We chose a station to work at and were ready to hand out snacks and drinks to the participants. There was a wide assortment of food laid out, including bagels, cream cheese, bread, chips, and gummies. We also had iced tea, sparkling water, and regular water. Our goal was to make sure they had enough fuel to perform at their best and enjoy a hearty breakfast before the challenge ahead. The atmosphere was lively, with the runners expressing their gratitude as they eagerly picked up their favorite foods.
When the runners started to head outside, we followed them and got ready to hand out food and drinks. We worked together, carrying our tables, food, and chairs outside to set up our stations near the parking lot, right by the finish line. Setting everything up took a little time, but we were excited to see the runners finish the race and hand out food to them. The music was blasting in the background, creating an upbeat atmosphere that kept everyone in good spirits. The music helped keep the excitement alive for the runners and the volunteers. As we handed out the food and drinks, the runners were thankful.
At the end of the event, we helped with the cleanup by packing up the leftover food and moving the chairs and tables back inside. Before wrapping up, we handed out the last few snacks to the remaining runners. Once we handed out the food that we could, we got to work cleaning up the area, picking up any litter left behind, and cleaning the tables. It was good to see people help clean up the area.
Volunteering at the JCC Stronger than Cancer 5k event was a great experience and a fun one too. This experience helped us learn how many people can gather together for a good cause and it made us feel good that we took part in it. We would volunteer here again to help cancer patients in the best way we could.
