On September 22, the Syosset AYLUS organization visited SUNY Old Westbury, where we walked to a building that specializes in tutoring children from kindergarten to fifth grade. Upon entering, we were assigned to different classrooms to assist the teachers as personal aides. As some AYLUS members were scattered around the building, our tasks included helping the kids connect to the internet, ensuring they stayed on task, and walking around to provide assistance when needed. In the higher-grade classes, such as the fifth graders, we helped the teacher read out Chinese characters for the students to write down on their computers. In the lower grades, we graded homework to ensure it was correct. At 3:30 PM, the little kids left, and we transitioned to the robotics room, where we helped the teacher set up for class. Each classroom had two AYLUS members assisting the teachers. We also helped carry the teachers’ belongings between classes and provided support with the board and computers. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS organization was very successful in tutoring the children in Chinese and assisting the staff at SUNY Old Westbury.
