The Greater Tulsa Branch participated in making mats for homeless people on Saturday, September 14th. We started by cutting plastic bags into long strips, then tying them together to form ropes, and finally crocheting the ropes together to make mats. By the end of the four hours, we had created several plastic “yarn” balls ready to be crocheted into mats and made our own mats that could be finished and sent off. We were able to learn how simple and collective efforts could be used to help those in need and get an insight on the challenges that people without basic necessities face on the daily. We also aim to bring this craft into our own community and provide something interesting for the elders to do in their free time.
There were 5 AYLUS participants along with 1 advisor participating. Everyone got 4 volunteer hours from 8:00-12:00.
