AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch Weed and Mulch the Garden In Bowne Playground (8/31/24)

On August 31st, 2024, AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch members worked with Green Earth Urban Gardens and Maureen Regan at Bowne Playground. This is our 118th event, from 8:30 am to 12:30, and the day was cloudy with a breeze.

We started the event by setting up tables and placing peaches and apples on the table. At first, we didn’t know what the peaches and apples brought by Maureen were for. Then Maureen told the members to hand out the peaches and apples to the local parkgoers. This helps members to be more sociable and talk to strangers. This helps us to step out of our confront zone and communicate with other people.

After all the fruits were handed out, Maureen told us that we were tasked with weeding and mulching a school’s garden that’s next to the Bowne Playground for the event. ALYUS Oakland Garden Members were tasked with removing all the plants growing in the gardens as the garden will be used for the upcoming school year. Some members choose to use rakes and shovels to remove the plants. Some members also used brooms to sweep the leaves and trash on the ground near the garden. Everybody worked together to remove the plants and helped each other out. There were also vines growing on the fences of the garden. So some members were tasked with removing as many vines as they could.

After all the plants were removed, the members of the AYLUS Oakland Gardens worked on mulching the garden. The reason a layer of mulch was put over the dirt was to prevent any more plants from growing. The members were moving like a unit some were tasked with loading up the barrel, some were tasked with moving the barrel to and from the garden, and the rest were tasked with spreading the mulch evenly. At the end of the event, the school had a freshly mulched garden ready for the school year.

We would like to thank Counsel Woman Sandra Ung for coming and checking our event. Sandra Ung represents the 20th Council District, which includes Flushing, Mitchell-Linden, Murray Hill, Queensboro Hill and Fresh Meadows.

We would also like to thank Maureen Regan for offering us food and water throughout the event. Thank you to all the AYLUS Oakland Garden members who went to help out during the event.
