At NOSH Delivers! Food Pantry on Thursday, August 29, ALYUS Roslyn volunteered from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Since the pandemic hit in 2020, NOSH Delivers has been helping feed people in need.
At NOSH, we worked on many tasks, including creating NOSH bags, restocking the shelves, and preparing NOSH delivery bags. The day was very busy, but we had a lot of fun helping! When we had trouble with a task, those around us were incredibly helpful. With 28,132 residents and a 15.3% poverty rate in 2022, Glen Cove, New York, was home to many people who relied on NOSH for assistance in feeding their families. To make sure that kids wouldn’t go without breakfast and lunch for the day, we prepared paper bags and packed them with food. The volunteers used their creativity to create the paper bags, and we had fun using stickers and markers to decorate them to make the children smile. We also filled plastic delivery bags with rice, walnuts, pinto beans, and green beans to place on people’s front doors. To make sure everything was available for the customers who came in and needed it, we helped in restocking the shelves!
Volunteering at NOSH has helped us open our eyes and have a better understanding of why helping people is important and it has also helped us with our organization and teamwork skills. We saw many people walk in and out of the establishment. Volunteering there was worth it because when we saw people walk out, their bags full of groceries and smiles on their faces, knowing they could have a nice meal.
