AYLUS Syosset helps at Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary And Audubon Center 8/23/24

On August 23, members of AYLUS Syosset volunteered at Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary And Audubon Center. We had 7 members participate. We were assigned to help wash the recently used kayaks in salt water. Washing your kayaks or anything that has been through salt water is essential as salt is highly corrosive, especially to the metal parts like bolts and screws. Cleaning these components helps sustain and extend the kayak’s usage. Cleaning the salt off also helps avoid environmental contamination. Saltwater can carry marine organisms, algae, and other contaminants. Washing your kayak helps prevent the transfer of these organisms to freshwater environments, thus reducing the risk of spreading invasive species. We were able to help clean all the kayaks, inside and out, and put them back onto the racks by the end of the 2 hours.
