Reported by Hsin Chen(Julie) Lu :
On August 17th, 2024, Murrieta AYLUS members worked with the Solutions for Change organization, a full-service leadership development residential program for the homeless in the country. They offer various programs such as Solutions Academy geared toward parents, Solutions Enterprise to encourage earning, and Solutions in the Community where Solutions Academy students help improve their community.
Upon arriving, Murrieta AYLUS members checked in before helping to set up the venue. Today, they will be taking care of the children while their parents attend mandatory workshops at Solutions for Change. They were assigned to work together with the Student Leadership Club in serving food to the children. The members were assigned to work with Group 1 (youngest) in a separate building. To prepare for the kids’ arrival, the members prepared bowls of chicken nuggets and watermelon with apple sauce and yogurts, which were handed out to everyone once sat down. The members were attentive in their care for the children, making sure everyone was eating and had everything they needed, and quickly cleaning up any food or drinks that were spilled. Once they were finished, the members moved on to assist with serving dinner Groups 2 and 3. Each child was given the option of pepperoni or cheese pizza, a selection of fruit, snacks, and pumpkin pie for dessert. When all the children were fed, the members helped serve dinner to the volunteers. After finishing their food, the members busied themselves with teaching the kids arts and crafts, overseeing the playground to make sure no one got hurt, and cleaning up any messes that were made. As parents started picking their kids up, the members slowly transitioned to packing up the equipment at the dinner station.
