On 8/10/24, members of AYLUS Syosset collaborated with members of AYLUS Great Neck at the Planting Fields Arboretum to remove the invasive ivy known as English Ivy and pick up chestnuts and branches from the ground. Due to the recent poor and stormy weather, many chestnuts and branches had fallen and were obstructing the paths of the park. Additionally, the English Ivy had completely taken over an area of the park and was preventing the park from growing more native species; the ivy would also grow on trees, weakening them and competing with them for natural resources.
As a result, members of both branches split into two groups: one to remove the ivy, and one to get rid of chestnuts and branches on the ground. The group removing the ivy used tools such as rakes and clippers to dispose of the ivy, so the park wouldn’t have to resort to using herbicides to clear out the ivy, while the other group worked diligently to gather and dispose of the chestnuts and branches.
Members that participated include (All 2.5 hours): Anson Ye, Vincent Ye, Kingston Lu, Geyan Lou, Justin Lin, Riley Lin, Ryan Lin, Jaden Huang, Andrew Lin, and Audrey Lin.
