AYLUS Great Neck Branch host AAPI event at the Great Neck Public Library (1st) 8/2/24

On Friday, August 2nd, from 4pm to 5pm, the Great Neck Branch of AYLUS volunteered to read AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) book titles for young readers while also organizing many different arts & crafts activities. Yuhao (Henry) Xu, Serena Chen, and Kylie Lam read picture books to children, engaging them in tales of “bao-making,” dim sum, and family. The picture books were Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao, Dim sum for everyone!, and When the Cousins Came. Everyone enjoyed these stories and were inspired to learn more about Chinese culture. Other volunteers helped set up different stations for coloring pages, learning how to use chopsticks, and folding pretend-bao with play-doh. Additionally, volunteers taught a Chinese Mandarin lesson about family members, ending with the children singing a song about family to the tune of “Happy Birthday.” Overall, everyone had a great time while learning a lot about AAPI culture.
