In July of 2024, AYLUS Houston volunteers teamed up with LSA’s youth advocacy program for a week-long initiative to promote healthy lifestyles in Asian-American youth. Volunteers worked on building advocacy skills, creating community health projects, enhancing awareness of cancer prevention, and expanding knowledge of nutrition and healthy lifestyles.
Throughout the week, volunteers learned about nutrition, cancer and its impact on Asian Americans, food safety, precision medicine, ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and how to stay informed about government policies. Every day, volunteers first received two hours of training (no service hours awarded) before applying what they have learned in various areas of LSA’s services. These areas include the LSA charity clinic, cancer prevention center, special needs care center, and benefits application center. Additionally, volunteers initiate various activities for future youth-led advocacy projects. They engaged in numerous collaborative projects and presented their findings to the class through interactive worksheets and group activities.
The experience made volunteers more aware of the society around them and showed them how lessons about nutrition could be applied to daily life. Along with classmates, they discovered effective ways to educate others through programs like Humming Bird, under the Light and Salt Association, and All of Us. The diverse range of activities, from nutrition education to community engagement, demonstrated a strong commitment to creating lasting positive change. Overall, this was a highly valuable experience for AYLUS Houston.
