On Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 9:00–1:00 PM, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at NOSH Delivers, a non-profit organization in Glen Cove that aims to help families struggling with food insecurity. Their mission is to improve the well-being of the North Shore community by increasing access to food, as well as basic goods and services.
Today, our tasks involved assisting customers who needed help and restocking shelves that were running low on supplies. We carried many boxes filled with supplies back and forth to ensure the shelves were well-stocked. Additionally, we organized the shelves to make them neat and orderly for future customers. Even though communicating with some customers was challenging because they spoke limited English, the employees helped translate, allowing us to understand and assist the customers effectively. After two hours of assisting customers and stocking shelves, we were assigned to distribute fliers in neighborhoods near NOSH. We were instructed to go house to house, placing fliers in mailboxes. We split into smaller groups to cover different areas. Despite the intense heat that day, we persevered and completed our task. After an hour, we returned to NOSH, feeling accomplished and knowing our efforts would help promote NOSH’s cause. We hope more people in need will reach out to NOSH for support. The experience also strengthened our teamwork and determination. At the end, we took all the cardboard boxes that came from the supplies and disposed of them.
Our experience today, assisting NOSH was incredibly enlightening. As we distributed food and assisted people in need, we realized just how much of a difference our efforts can make. We learned the importance of helping families meet their basic needs. This opportunity allowed us to see firsthand the positive impact we can have on our community, highlighting the importance of coming together to support those around us. It was a powerful reminder that even small actions can lead to meaningful change.
