On July 18th, 2024, members of AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch had a watering event at Crocheron Park. This is our 89th event so far held by AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch.
Some dedicated members of our branch showed up at Crocheron Park to help water the plants there. We noticed that some of the plants looked as if they were dying, and some parts of the soil was dry, just like sand. At the start of the event, Jessica helped us turn the hose on already. The hose is connected to a pump in the ground, where we can access it through opening the latch with a key. Once opened, the hose is then connected to the pump with an adapter. We used that to then fill up buckets and water the garden. However, towards the end of the event, we had trouble turning off the water. Our members and Jessica worked together to try to turn off the water as the valve was stuck. As we couldn’t turn it off, Jessica called Ralph from NYC Parks to help us figure it out. Once he showed up, he showed us how to turn it off properly, and that when turning it on, we don’t have to turn it all the way as it will only cause the valve to get stuck. We only have to turn the valve till we see the water begin to bubble out of the pump as turning it further will not change anything due to the fact that it already has a set water pressure.
A special thank you to Jessica from Friends of Crocheron Park & John Golden Park and Ralph from NYC Parks, who took their time and taught us how to water the plants. We couldn’t have done it without their help!
