On Monday, July 15th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m, members of the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at NOSH Delivers!, a food pantry helping people in need of extra groceries.
Our first task was to assemble NOSH bags that would be delivered to Glen Cove residents. Today, we managed to make 240 NOSH bags filled with rice, oil, chili, corn, and beans. These bags are given to people in the Glen Cove area that cannot arrange transportation to get groceries in person, such as the elderly, disabled, or parents with children at home. Many of these bags are also given to bigger organizations such as AHRC to hand out to people outside of the local area.
During the summer, children are usually at home since school is no longer in session. Due to this, they can no longer receive free lunches at school, and families need more groceries than usual. We saw many parents bringing their children to the food pantry, and we gave them extra snacks for them to enjoy at home, in addition to the other groceries. It was nice to see the children’s faces light up as they got to choose their favorite snacks from NOSH’s wide selection.
We noticed that more people came than last week, and according to the NOSH founders, after giving out flyers the last couple of days, the number of visitors have increased. Since moving to their new location, they have lost some shoppers and some people have forgotten that NOSH can help when going through tough times. It was rewarding to know that our efforts were helping more people learn about NOSH and we hope that more people will donate as NOSH becomes more well-known in the community.
