Oakland Gardens Branch Waters of Community Garden (07/13/2024)

On July 13, AYLUS’ Oakland Gardens branch held its 86th event at a community garden in P.S. 390Q. We watered the plants and took out the weeds. Since it rained this morning, we didn’t have to water the plants as much as we did on other days, but the weather was nice and there was a slight breeze.

We had to water the plants and keep them healthy because it was summertime. When we arrived, we put on gloves and started working. We started off by picking out weeds and tried to pull them out from the roots to stop them from growing back again. Some members got buckets and waited to put water inside, while others went to help with the hose. Because the hose takes a lot of time to untangle, there must always be at least four people helping start or put back the two long hoses.

After that, we started to find ripe vegetables which included green peppers, basil, tomatoes, and cucumbers. We harvested them and got back to work. There were some members who used buckets to water the plants, while others used the hose to provide water. We watered the plants, ensuring that each plant was meeting the requirements without overwatering.

Overall, this event was fun and taught us how to help our community and make it a better place. We learned how to water the plants and pick out weeds. We will continue to help this garden and wait until the vegetables are fully grown and ready to get harvested.
