On the Fourth of July, we went to Jones Beach to protect the birds that nest and live on the sandbanks behind the beach from potential disturbances by beachgoers. We set up our tents and umbrellas in front of the fence that surrounded the sandbank to prevent people from approaching or playing with anything that could fall into the sandbanks, such as frisbees and balls. Our efforts helped report and prevent three instances of people crossing into the sandbanks, potentially saving the lives of multiple birds.
While most of the AYLUS Great Neck members were guarding the sandbanks, a select few were out fundraising for future AYLUS endeavors. Groups of 2-3 members were formed and sent out to fundraise. Each group averaged 4 miles in distance traveled as they moved to fields 2 and 3 to maximize the amount of money raised, demonstrating their dedication to our cause. We sold America-themed merchandise such as red, white, and blue bucket hats, sunglasses, bracelets, and flags. In total, we made $559, and after accounting for the money spent on acquiring the merchandise, we profited around $400.
After the activity, some of the students who participated in the fundraising shared their experiences, which were consolidated into a transcript to provide a useful example for our students.
