On Thursday, July 4th, the members of the Roslyn AYLUS branch volunteered at the Jones Beach
Fireworks Spectacular event from 5:00 – 11:00 pm to help protect the shorebird breeding areas
under the guidance of the New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preseveration. The
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees parks, historic
sites, and recreational trails, while providing safe space for everyone to enjoy and protecting
natural and historical resources.
To celebrate the birth of American independence, upwards of 150,000 visitors attended the
dazzling celebration. As assistants to the Environment Stewards, the AYLUS volunteers
participated in the following tasks: guarded the fence area from visitors to protect the
endangered birds and picked up trash to keep the beach clean and safe for all to enjoy. The
volunteers also notified the beach security of several incidents when the visitors’ balls went
over the fence. We educated the visitors why it is important not to have flying objects next to
the breeding areas.
