On July 3rd, the 81st event was held by AYLUS Oakland Gardens. We went to our local community garden at P.S. 390Q to water and weed the plants. This school has been open for 5 years and they just built the garden a couple years ago. Our mission this summer is to keep the plants healthy and have people to watch over this garden. The weather was pretty nice and everybody was excited to get started. Even though it was a long day for our members, this might have cheered them up.
A lot of the plants were planted by the kids at this school and they did a really good job planting them. There is a variety of plants, flowers, and vegetables like tomatoes, lettuce, and many squashes. The members that helped us at this garden started off by weeding the plants. There was a lot of grass to be picked and we got to work. This took us about 10-20 minutes to do. We also had to pull it out straight from the roots so the grass wouldn’t grow back. After these 30 minutes, we went to water the plants. We had some malfunctions with the hoses because the water was spraying everywhere, getting everyone wet. We used the holes in the hoses like another hose and filled up buckets we brought from home. The members made sure not to over water the plants and drown them.
This event was very good for learning about how to water and weed plants and it was very fun for the members. We are excited to see if we will find other vegetables the next time we go.
