From June 24 to June 28, members of the Newtown Branch of AYLUS dedicated their time between 9 AM and 1 PM to volunteering at the Salvation Army Worship & Community Center (575 E State St, Trenton, NJ) summer camp. Our volunteers provided tutoring and counselor services to young campers ranging from 6 to 12.
The team members led small tutor groups of 6 to 10-year-old campers. These groups focused on teaching basic English reading comprehension, correct pronunciation, and foundational math skills, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They designed interactive and engaging lessons, introduced problem-solving approaches for both math and reading, and supplied the campers with numerous practice exercises to enhance their skills.
In addition to tutoring, our volunteers played a crucial role in the camp, taking on responsibilities such as looking after the campers’ well-being, helping with meal service, keeping the camp facilities clean, and constantly supervising the campers to ensure their safety and offer support when needed. Additionally, members of the Newtown Branch served as mentors and aides to the camp leader, offering guidance and support as required.
Members who participated in this camp were Diana Zhang, Angela Zheng, and Sarah Xue. Each member completed 4 hours of volunteer work daily, accumulating a total of 20 hours each.
