SMILE 4 Special Needs (#168): Pearland Branch Teaching Bucket Drumming at GiGi’s Playhouse (#9) – June 27, 2024

On June 27, 2024, Pearland volunteers conducted a bucket drumming lesson at GiGi’s Playhouse Sugar Land for teens with Down syndrome. The session began with a review of previous lessons, including producing different sounds by striking the bucket’s center, rim, and side. The participants then practiced varying tempos and counting beats. To add an element of fun, volunteers led a “Red, Yellow, Green” game where participants practiced soft and hard beats and stopping on command. The session concluded with participants playing along to the rhythm of a popular song, reinforcing their skills in a joyful manner. After the bucket drumming session, volunteers engaged the participants in a discussion about Independence Day celebrations. They shared knowledge and traditions, and distributed July 4th party favors, enriching the participants’ understanding and anticipation of the holiday.
