On Saturday, June 8th, the Roslyn branch toiled away at the beach from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm in the Audubon Center’s Be a Good Egg Program.
Many endangered bird species such as the Piping Plover and the American Oystercatchers nest on the beach. With more and more visitors frequenting the beach as summer rolls in, their habitats are threatened by trampling feet and careless visitors who disregard the fenced-in area.
We stood by the entrances and talked to the visitors about the various bird species and asked them to sign pledges pledging to respect the habitats and clean up after themselves on the beach. We also handed out stickers to children and distributed coloring books and pamphlets with more information regarding the various bird species.
In total, we collected roughly 160 pledges. Though not everybody wanted to sign the pledge, it was heartwarming to see how many people wanted to make a difference and spread awareness about the endangered bird species.
