On Sunday, June 2nd, from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, members of the Roslyn AYLUS Branch
volunteered at SunriseWalks to assist in their annual walkathon.
The event took place at the Sunrise campground, a summer camp for children with cancer and
their siblings, offered free of charge. The event was a result of a very successful fundraising
campaign, with the generous donations from corporate, community and individual sponsors.
Hundreds of participants came to support this great cause and volunteers were in high demand.
Before the walk started, volunteers were assigned to different stations to help the event run
smoothly. Some of our volunteers were assigned to the registration table, where they handed
out t-shirts to the participants after they checked in. Others were assigned to the Camp Village,
where variety of fun activities were provided for the participants, such as bracelet making,
tattoos, and team signs and bags decorating.
Later, we headed over to the finish line to cheer the walkers. At the carnival, we went back and
forth between thebeverage table and the refrigerators to make sure cold drinks were in ample
supplies to give out to the participants after their walk. We also helped run games and
attractions and cleaned up in the end.
Cancer patients can often feel alone at times and providing them with a day camp helps them to
connect with kids their age. We were proud to be able to help the Sunrise Association in their
mission to bring back the joys of childhood to children battling cancer and their siblings.
