On May 26th, The East Pittsburgh AYLUS branch volunteered for 5 hours preparing for the Asian food culture event referred to as “Taste of Asia. ” This event was vibrant and busy with the aim of representing the diverse Asian culture, especially concerning food. Firstly, we helped the many cooks by moving their utensils and other cooking materials from their cars to their respective stands. It required lifting and carrying, as well as being very cautious with fragile items to avoid them getting damaged during transfer. Besides that, we assisted in coordinating the cooks to their booths as well in case of any interruption during the event. The area itself was rather large and filled with people and activities so all the cooks should have a clear idea of where to position them and their tools. One of the most significant and enjoyable duties that we performed as volunteers was interpreting for the cooks who had limited English-speaking abilities. This entailed the application of language skills in order to minimize communication barriers so that the cooks could fully comprehend instructions, ask questions, and even be in a position to converse with the event planners as well as participants.
