On Sunday, May 26th, members of the Roslyn AYLUS branch volunteered at the Jones Beach Air show from 9:00-3:00 to assist the endangered species stewards.
On Memorial Weekends, Jones beach was packed and crowded, with families all over long island coming to view the annual air show. AYLUS volunteers make sure to keep a safe and clean environment for the endangered species on the beach area, especially for the small beach bird, piping plovers. To maintain a safe environment for the birds, volunteers asked visitors to not camp close to the fenced off areas, and to make sure that activities including toys, beachballs, frisbees, are performed at a reasonable distance from the fence. Volunteers also help pick up litter from the beach. Volunteers help maintain distance between humans and animals, and to preserve the natural and clean environment on the beaches by spreading awareness to beachgoers.
This year’s air show was canceled midway through on Sunday due to unexpected weather conditions and fog. However, many families still remained on the beach to relax, which still made it no less important for the aid of volunteers. Despite the unfortunate situation, volunteers still cleaned up the beaches and did their job, and made sure they helped keep beachgoers from getting too close to the fence.
