The Roslyn AYLUS volunteers helped out at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island’s school on a gloomy Sunday of May 5th. From 1:30 to 5 PM at Neck South High School, our group supported various activities at the school.
We move to our own assign classroom on time and start to check in with the teachers is the first thing for every week as a teacher assistant. Today is an open house day, therefore the school is bustling with different tasks. Today our work involved more than just checking students’ homework, guiding students to the restroom, and printing classwork. When the class began, we need to ensure students’ behaviour during class while helping out the teacher to create a cupboard near the front class door for the open house. During the open house, we collaborate with our teacher to create the best environment for our students to study. As the teacher gives detailed lessons in the front, we answer each student’s question, guide them through each problem, and try our best to help and support them. We aimed to create an environment where students feel encouraged to give their best, focusing and actively participating in their exploration of Chinese knowledge.
From 4-5pm, the students attended their many extracurricular classes. Each volunteer was assigned different duties to take care of students in activities like calligraphy, art, kung fu and more. The kung fu session ran at the school’s cafeteria, since the gym is closed today. During Kong Fu class, we helped to make sure the kids didn’t roughhouse and instead focused on learning new techniques and appreciating Chinese culture through martial arts. It was difficult at first for the kids to remember all the new moves quickly, but with practice they got better at it as they became more familiar with the forms. During this time, we escorted our group to their designated room and looked out for their enjoyment while participating in their programs.
Overall, I had a productive afternoon assisting at the Chinese school. The students’ positive engagement in these activities demonstrates the dedication of both teachers and assistants. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help CCA achieve its critical purpose of sharing Chinese culture and education with the local community.
