On Sunday May fifth, members of Syosset AYLUS helped the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary with their annual native plants sale. Volunteers helped customers carry wagons and plants, check out plants and write down the plants each customer got to make checkout easier. Along with helping the native plant sale, members were also able to educate customers on the characteristics as well as benefits of native plants. The purpose of this event was to get people to plant native plants in their gardens as native plants provide a variety of benefits such as food for pollinators in the form of nuts and seeds, increases the water retaining ability of soil which prevents run off and soil erosion, and it’s well adapted to the soil in Long Island so it doesn’t need any fertilizer or pesticides.
