On Saturday April 27th, members of Syosset AYLUS helped to clean up Stehli Beach at Bayville to prepare for migrating birds to lay eggs on the shores of Long Island. Birds nesting on Stehli Beach include the Piping Plover and Common Tern which are federally recognized as a threatened species and is state protected. It is important to protect the breeding areas of such species because their numbers have been declining in recent years and also because they are an indicator species. Indicator species are important to an ecosystem as they are sensitive to changes, meaning that they are able to give warning signs of any environmental, climate, and other ecological changes.
