On Saturday, 20th, April 2024, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the Roslyn Branch of Aylus
volunteered at the Greenvale house run by the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County
(CP Nassau). CP Nassau is a nonprofit organization that provides the best possible care for
adults and children with cerebral palsy. One of the programs they provide is residential homes
that provide a safe, comfortable, and positive living environment. This particular group home
houses 6 residents.
Today our volunteers planned fun-packed activities that the residents enjoyed. The first
game we played was called Headbands. We took turns wearing a headband that had cards on
it. Each card had a different picture of foods, household items, animals, etc. Whoever was
wearing the headband had to ask a variety of questions to try and figure out what the item was.
Then we played Uno, it was super fun and got a bit competitive towards the end but we all
enjoyed playing this game. We took a break from games and started our pre planed baking
activity, today ‘s recipe is pound cake. Each resident took turns in assisting the creation of this
cake. One of them combined the wet ingredients, while one worked on the dry ingredients, one
mixed them all together, and another one poured the batter into the pan. The smell of sweet
vanilla was all throughout the kitchen and the residents couldn’t wait to eat the cake. Once we
got the cake out of the oven, we cut the cake into small pieces, and everyone got a chance to
try it and we finished the whole cake in no time. The residents enjoyed it very much and we
even talked about what to cook for our next visit. After eating the snack, we played a game of
Monopoly. One of the challenges was some residents were a little confused about the rules of
the game. However, with the help of one of the residents, we were able to properly explain the
games to all the residents. In the end we all had a great time playing monopoly, buying fake
properties, and earning Monopoly money. We learned that we have to be patient when
explaining rules. We also learned that it is important to know the strengths and weaknesses of
each resident and utilize them to help each other.
