On 4/20/24, members of AYLUS Syosset helped remove mugwort in bioswale at Catering Pavilion Lot of Sunken Meadow State Park. Mugwort is an invasive species originated from Europe and Eastern Asia, competing over nutrients and land space with native plants also growing in the bioswale and tips the biodiversity of the ecosystem.
It is important that we help remove such invasive organism as they have no natural predators and can tolerate a wide range of conditions, therefore they could spread like wildfire. By removing mugwort plants, we are also helping the surrounding native plants regain nutrients and territory. It is important to preserve native species such as the asclepias syriaca or more commonly known as milkweed, which is a food source for butterflies, because they can be essential to the environment and the local fauna.
