On April 13, 2024, AYLUS members collaborated with Long Island residents at the Spring Harbor Cleanup & Marine Education Expo. Volunteers found bottle caps, styrofoam containers, glass shards, cigarette butts, and plastic wrappers.
Collecting unwanted debris and trash creates a safe environment for the wildlife, preventing animals from being entangled or ingesting the garbage. Thousands of birds and marine animals die every year from being trapped in fishing lines, strapping bands, and 6-pack ring holders. Unsuspecting turtles and fishes may ingest plastics, causing internal injury and starvation.
Annual cleanup programs can increase awareness and positive changes to one’s spending habits and recycling efforts. Members gained insight on environmental responsibility and management through a firsthand view of the impact trash has on our beaches and harbors.
Gratitude to the following 4 young volunteers, totaling 8.5 volunteer hours collectively.
