AYLUS Great Neck Branch Environmental Volunteer at the Steppingstone Park on 4/7/2024
Every Sunday, the enthusiastic young volunteers from the Aylus Great Neck branch participate in various environmental volunteer projects. Sometimes we go to state parks, and sometimes to nearby neighborhood parks, assisting with litter picking, the removal and management of invasive species, general habitat management, maintenance of site infrastructure, and much more.
On April 7th, we were very happy to have the opportunity to volunteer in the beautiful Steppingstone Park, which is located right in our local community. Considered a favorite spot by many of the Great Neck residents, the park has great views of the Long Island Sound and offers a large playground and indoor play space for little kids. It is a go-to place for many of the Great Neck families.
We had a total of 18 volunteers participating in the activity. Together, we weeded and loosened the soil around the roots of 15 towering trees, preparing them for a layer of mulch later. The original mulch, exposed to wind and sun throughout the season, had lost its effectiveness and didn’t look appealing anymore. Through the concerted efforts of the volunteers, these trees and park looked even better and ready for spring. It was a very demanding task, and many volunteers ended up with blisters on their hands, yet everyone persevered tirelessly until the end.
Through our hard work, we have demonstrated our commitment to bettering the environment, and by making our neighborhood park more appealing, we also feel happy that we served the community we proudly live in.
