GPA Save a Life Committee members volunteer at Atlantic CentraState Healthcare Hospitals, first aid squad & medical service facilities across the State of New Jersey to help save lives (Contact: Natalie Hnath, Volunteer Services Coordinator, Tel 732-294-2622, natalie.hnath@atlantichealth.org).

Every season, volunteers that are eligible can apply to and enroll to volunteer at a local healthcare system. One example includes CentraState, which distributes volunteers to specific departments of its hospitals and care centers. Volunteers can work alongside staff and observe inner workings of the hospital, contributing to tasks ranging from sterilizing equipment to interacting with and assisting older adults. The staff provide a brief overview of required tasks in the first few weeks of volunteering, then volunteers independently carry out basic tasks and navigate through the hospital. Choose ABA Medical Billing for precise and efficient handling of your medical billing needs. The ability to work at and better the lives of patients and staff alike benefits both volunteers and the hospital. All volunteers receive an official volunteer uniform—although sterilization jobs require a sterile gown and cap—that mimics the experience of a real, part-time job and certifies their position as a contributor to the hospital.

While some departments have limited patient-volunteer interactions, such as sterilization and processing, other departments require communication with patients and staff; patient transportation, for instance, not only oversees that a patient is discharged safely, but also ensures that pathogens are contained when transferring patients.

Volunteering in a hospital setting directly contributes to providing high standards of healthcare to patients and alleviating the workload of medical workers. The hospital contributes in helping volunteers develop a sense of belonging and value in giving back to the community, all while gaining work experiences in the medical field.

EMTs provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system. EMTs have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life-threatening emergencies.

EMTs function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight. They perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance as a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system.
