On Monday, January 29th, members of the Oakland Garden Branch went to Public School 203 to pick up books that they had raised for our cause, the African Library Project. Some students in our branch, who currently go to this school, had asked the student organization teachers if Public School 203 could help raise some books for our goal. They agreed, set out some boxes, and released a video across the school with more information about our book drive.
When we arrived at the entrance of the school, we were greeted by the security guard, Mrs. Newman. While we were packing the books into bags, as we had done before, one of the student organization teachers, Ms. Popovitz, arrived. One of our member’s parents made balloons for the security guard Mrs. Newman, and both of the student organization teachers, Ms. Popovitz and Mrs. Casper. Unfortunately, Mrs. Casper had an important meeting and couldn’t attend this event, and even though Ms. Popovitz came, she had to leave soon due to another meeting. While Ms. Popovitz was there she noticed some kids in our group had graduated from P.S 203 and some of those kids used to be in her class. She was very proud of her students when she discovered they decided to join this group and do something that’ll help the community.
After loading bags fully to the brim with books we helped load books into the parent advisor’s car. After all the bags were loaded into the car our parent advisor’s car was loaded and all you could see were bags in the car. While we were loading the bags we counted each bag we put in and discovered that we had loaded 23 bags full of books. Ms. Popovitz later told us that she thought we should pick up books every 2 weeks if there were enough books in the boxes, but if there were too few books then, we’d pick up books once a month.
Thank you for everyone’s support, every single book we get it takes us a step closer to our goal.
