On January 28, 2024, 1:30-5:00 pm, the Roslyn AYLUS branch volunteered at the Chinese cultural association of Long Island to help out teachers with the kids.
Our goal is to keep the children in place, and safe, and to help out the teachers who have a lot on their hands. We aided the teachers by helping them with attendance, making sure the kids have supplies they needed for class, passing out papers, etc. This week however was a bit different, as the CCALI program had a speech contest where the children who signed up went up to the stage and performed a poem or any event that happened in their past. Not only does this event provide a platform for children to improve their public speaking skills, but it also encourages them to engage creatively by sharing personal stories or reciting poems. Such activities are vital for building confidence and self-expression in young minds.
As volunteers, our role in this event was multifaceted. Firstly, organizing and lining up the children in class demonstrates the ability to manage and guide young learners. This step is crucial as it sets the tone for their behavior and readiness for the event. Secondly, assisting them in getting on stage is a supportive gesture that can help alleviate any nervousness or anxiety they might feel. This part of our role is particularly impactful as it directly contributes to the children’s confidence and comfort.
