On January 21 of 2024, The Roslyn AYLUS branch partnered with The Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island, as scheduled from 1:30 to 5:00 PM at Great Neck South High School.
As a teacher’s assistant, our main responsibility is to aid in the efficiency of the classroom. And our tasks can range form taking attendance, running errands, or helping the kid understand the material better. Our work helps lessen the teacher’s load, enabling for them to do what they do with the utmost efficiency. Although our main job is to help the teacher, it is crucial that we balance our time helping the them and helping the children, ensuring that the class is able to run properly. In doing this, genuine interactions and communication between ourselves and the children have really played a major role in making sure that they feel comfortable. Establishing that kind of security allows for the kids to feel comfortable in this environment, fostering a positive outlook when learning chinese.
One of the main struggles that we faced is keeping the children in control, making sure that they are focused in class. As there is only such a brief window that they are here, we want to maximize their leaning. Im order to help them pay attention, we try to make the class engaging, trying to work with them and not against them.
The second portion of the day was their cultural classes. In Kung Fu class, the kids were able to move their bodies, exercise discipline, and engage with Chinese culture in a different way. Through their efforts and determination, they were able to complete 2 different sets of new moves. Some of them struggles with executing the moves as the teacher did, but as they practiced and familiarized themselves with it, they were able to succeed. It is such a gift to be able to work so closely with teachers and children celebrating and learning about Chinese culture. Overall, the day was a great success, and we look forward to the next time!
