On January 12, 2024, from 2:30 p.m to 3:00 p.m, AYLUS Oakland Gardens members went to P.S 203 to pick up books. Even though the book donation box for several days, many students from P.S 203 were all eager to help and in a short matter of days boxes were overflowing with books. Therefore, the school’s student organization teachers decided to call our parent advisor to pick up the books.
When we went inside the school we were surprised to see so many books. Our members estimated that there might be over 400 books in the bins. As we transported the books we discovered that some books were even in different languages like Chinese and Korean. Some members were worried that kids in Africa couldn’t read different languages so they told the parent advisor. Our parent advisor told us that we’ll put aside some time in the future events to check the books to see if they’re usable, and she also said that if the books don’t qualify for the Africa Library Project, we would donate them to a public library. There were so many books that the P.S 203 security guard, Mrs. Newman, had to help us take the books out to load into the car.
As the year moves on we wish to reach our goal of getting 1000 books and money for the shipping fee to ship the books to Africa, and an additional 500 dollars to help make the library in Africa. We hope that our books would really make a big difference for kids in Africa. We really appreciate all the help from the members of P.S 203.
We would like to thank everyone who is helping us reach this goal. Every little book is another step towards providing one more library for children in Africa.
