Location: Bayard Cutting Arboretum, 440 Montauk Highway, Great River NY 11739
Time: 9:30 – 12:00
On December 16th, 2023, the Roslyn AYLUS Branch participated in removing a group of invasive plants known as English Ivy. This particular plant had a massive network of roots and formed a dense monoculture in the area. Using tools provided by our friends from the New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, we were able to shrink the area of coverage by over 50%, and collected over 3 golf carts full of English Ivy. We hope that this will allow some of the native plants to recover and thrive. At the end of the activity we were also able to enjoy a pleasant tour of the mansion nearby, thanks to the people at Arboretum. This activity has allowed the branch to take notice of the invasive species nearby and how a small amount of work can unveil something much bigger. We hope to continue working in outdoor activities like this and enjoy these activities a lot!
