On December 3rd, the Aylus members helped collect food and money donations to the Island Harvest Food bank. Island Harvest Food Bank is a leading hunger-relief organization with a mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. Island Harvest is among the region’s foremost agencies in emergency response readiness for food, product, resource distribution and support, and is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger relief organization.
Since it was raining today, we set up two tables and splitted into two groups inside the Stop and Shop store. We asked customers if they would be willing to donate food or money to help the people who are in need. We handed out flyers and introduced Island Harvest as well. A lot of people contributed to the amount of food we collected today.
We received all sorts of goods. For example, we got canned gravy, mashed potatoes, two giant turkeys, and more. Some people were generous enough to donate 20-50 dollars. We collected approximately four shoppings carts of canned and /or packaged goods.
In conclusion, today was very successful for the Aylus group and Island Harvest food bank. What made us most impressed and grateful was that several people read the fliers and bought the food according to the list. Although it was raining and cold, we persevered through the chilly weather and had a significant day.
