On Saturday, November 11th, from 9:30 to 12:00 the Roslyn branch volunteered at
Bethpage State Park.
The Bethpage State Park covers almost 1500 acres of land. Today we mainly focused on the Green Garden where we removed invasive plants for the purpose of replanting native perennials.
We had to dig up deeply rooted invasive plants with different garden tools such as pitchforks, rakes, and gardening scissors. We disposed of the dirt and rows of sod by putting them onto trucks with the shovels and even our bare hands. Even though the task sounds simple, it was a backbreaking process. The dirt we picked up was very heavy and we had to do it repeatedly. We also learned that using the right tools for the right task would achieve better results. In the end, the Green Garden was cleaned to the best of our ability, and it will be ready for planting seeds in a few weeks.
Including our branch, there were over thirty volunteers working together. We learned a
valuable lesson of teamwork by helping each other. Today was a gorgeous, sunny day
and the park shows many different colors of foliage. The beauty of nature reminded us why
everyone should work together to maintain it.
Members that participated include:
Natalie Tsui (2.5 hours), Isabelle Tsui (2.5 hours), Maxim Li (2.5 hours), Leah Chan (2.5 hours).
