On Sunday, September 17th, from 1:30 – 5 pm, the AYLUS branch assisted the CCALI program at the Great Neck South High School in Great Neck.
CCALI is NYS nonprofit community organization; their mission is to educate future generations about the Chinese language and culture. As AYLUS Roslyn volunteers, we are proud to support.
On Sunday the volunteers helped out with the CCALI program. We all worked hard to help the teachers keep the class in order, translate for the students and parents, and assist the students if they needed anything. As we were volunteering, we got to see how the kids interacted and learned in the environment, but there were also parts where we struggled. Since they were so young it wasn’t so easy keeping them all engaged in what they were learning and to stay seated in their seats. Although there were these moments, everyone worked together to keep the class in order and to keep the kids focused. We encouraged them to participate to earn “coupons” for snacks, which is like a reward if they participated. We also assisted the kids when they needed to step outside to use the restrooms, to buy food, etc. during their break time we got to bond more with all the kids and learn more about them as well.
