On Saturday, September 9th, members of the AYLUS Syosset branch attended the Cornell Cooperative Extension Nassau Farmers’ Market at Eisenhower Park for the ninth week in a row! The market is dedicated to bringing awareness to the benefits of eating farm-fresh produce and supporting local businesses. There were many vendors featured at the market, all of whom sold locally-made items. These include vegetables, fruit, bread, baked goods, pickles, candles, and more. Each week, the booths change.
Members worked to set up the tents, chairs, tables, flags and signs. Members helped to give out free punch-cards to new and returning members and helped to answer the questions of incoming customers regarding the farmer’s market and the many services they provide. Members also interacted with the kids, giving them worksheets, stickers and temporary tattoos.
Members also interacted with kids by collaborating on an activity called ‘gardening in a glove’, where kids take damp tissue paper and plant seeds and germinate them inside a glove. Seeds included corn kernels, alfalfa, peas, sorghum grain, oats and soybeans.
Members participated include:
Alyssa Huang (4 hours), Margaret Zhang (4 h), Xuanming Liu (4 h), Tracy Xu(4h), Suying Li (4 h), Suiwai Li (4 h).
