From 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Sunday, August 27, the Bellaire Branch of AYLUS volunteered at the Houston Food Bank (535 Portwall St, Houston, TX 77029).
The Houston Food Bank is the U.S.’s largest food bank in distribution. It helps lead hunger relief in 18 counties in Southeast Texas by distributing food and other essentials through a network of more than 1,600 community partners. In addition, the Houston Food Bank provides programs and services to help families reach long-term stability.
According to the Houston Food Bank’s website, volunteers produce the equivalent of a meal a minute while sorting, processing, and packing food. During this event, AYLUS volunteers helped to make two-pound bags of yellow split peas, which were then sealed and packaged into boxes. By the end of the shift, volunteers had filled five pallets with 4,500 pounds of these packages, equal to 3,750 meals.
10 AYLUS volunteers participated in this event (8/27, 3 hours): Alexander Tang, Daniel Wu, Yuruo Shen, Mona Cai, Serena Li, Raymond Han, Isabel Li, William Zhou, Elizabeth Zhou, Shreyas Sinha and Andrew Chen.
