On August 22nd, members of AYLUS Syosset participated in volunteering at LINPI (Long Island Native Plants Initiative) Greenhouse in Brentwood. Members aided in the following tasks:
- preparing plant trays
- filling pots with soil
- preparing new batches of soil and fertilizer
- repotted buttonbush plants into bigger pots
Buttonbush is an important native species as it attracts important pollinators, provides food for waterfowl and are the host species for sphinx moths.
LINPI associate Pam gave the members a tour of the native plants LINPI provides. LINPI staff collect seeds of native Long Island plant species and cultivate them in the greenhouse to grow and distribute to gardeners. Plants include the swamp rose, species of joe-pye weed, species of cacti, white oak, switchgrass, common yarrow and multiple species of milkweed.
