On Friday, July 21, 2023, from 3:15 pm to 8:00PM, the Roslyn Branch partnered with the organization, Audubon New York at Sunken Meadow State park. This was to increase the awareness of and reduce threats to beach-nesting birds by encouraging visitors to pledge to “share the shore” with Piping Plovers and other beach-nesting bird species.
After setting up our station at Sunken Meadow Beach, we helped check guests into the event. We provided visitors with pamphlets and brochures about beach-nesting bird biology and information on how to reduce disturbances to birds. Then, we walked around the boardwalk to ask visitors to sign our “Be a Good Egg” pledge, agreeing to respect fenced off areas where birds are nesting, keep trash off the beach, and to keep dogs off of nesting beaches.
Additionally, we assisted park staff in interactive exhibits for guest in their Nature Center. We informed people about a bird walk with binoculars, where people followed instructors around the beach to view different bird species. While on the bird walk we picked up trash on the beach. At last, we helped to clean up the station.
Despite the reports of thunderstorms in the area, many people still showed up to the event. Through this experience, we learned the importance of protecting these endangered birds and saving the ecosystem. We also learned how to talk to visitors with a positive and friendly manner.
It motivated us to want to learn more on how to better protect our living environment.
