On Saturday, July 15th from 9:00 a.m.-2:00, the Roslyn Aylus branch members volunteered at Suken Meadow Field to get signatures for a pledge about endangered bird species.
First, we learned about endangered coastal birds such as the Piping Plover and American Oystercatcher. Human activities have caused many animals to become endangered. Trash left around could attract predators that eat the bird’s eggs. Bringing dogs can cause these birds to flee from their nests and scare them away. The dogs can also accidentally destroy their nests by stepping on them. In addition, we also made sure humans stayed away from enclosed areas or fenced areas on Suken Meadow Field beach to protect there fragile nests.
This information was then later used to get people’s signature to help protect these birds. On the pledge, they wrote their name, town, state, signature, e-mail, and if they’re interested in volunteering. To get their attention we used stickers, coloring books, pictures, and stuffed animals. The signatures are very important because they could be used to get the states government’s attention and receive grant money to build fences or enclosed areas for endangered bird species. Furthermore, signing the pledge would make people more aware about endangered birds and how they can protect them in the future. For 5 hours we raised at least 300 signatures.
