July 8th Garlic Picking event
On July 8th, from 9:30 am to 12 pm, the Roslyn AYLUS branch has volunteered to help harvest garlic and peas at the Bayard cutting Arboretum.
The Bayard cutting arboretum is an organic and proud no-tilling farm, meaning all of its crops are harvested by hand. This is to protect the natural elements within the soil along with the earthworms. The Arboretum is also a CSA farm, which stand for Community supported Agriculture farm. This means that people who buy shares and support the operation of the farms will receive part of the harvested produce will be reserved and given to them. This type of farm really benefits both the community and the farms, since residents could get the freshest and organic crops all year round.
Today, the Roslyn AYLUS branch helped to harvest garlic and peas, and we had even learned to differentiate the difference between good and bad ones. We were even allowed to harvest our own batch of organic peas to take home. Afterwards, we had stripped the vines and leftover peas from the nets to be used. The empty nets will be used to grow new peas. Lastly, we had helped to pluck weeds from the shallots and onion beds. In order not to accidentally spread more weeds, we were told to remove excess soil with our hands rather than shaking the soil and seeds off the weed. The AYLUS volunteers had worked hard today to help in the fields, and it gave us a chance to learn more about how to care for a farm.
