On June 17, 2023, the Great Neck Branch volunteered at Steppingstone Park for the GNCA BBQ Party. The GNCA (Great Neck Chinese Association) is a nonprofit organization that serves the Great Neck Chinese community. Their mission involves engaging in various activities, working with Great Neck schools and community leaders to promote a better understanding and acceptance of Chinese culture and residents, as well as organizing entertainment and educational events to foster cultural exchange with other communities. We were delighted to volunteer for this event.
From 3:00 to 7:00 PM, the Great Neck Branch volunteers participated in different tasks at the park. Initially, we decorated the surroundings with balloons. Then, we split into different groups to handle various responsibilities. One group was in charge of preparing salads and watermelon by placing them in separate cups. Another group was responsible for cooking hot dogs and hamburgers. Additionally, some volunteers made balloon animals for the children in attendance.
Afterward, we assisted in serving food to the attendees and took care of the children by engaging them in games or providing face painting. We interacted very well with everyone, ensuring that all needs were met. The event turned out to have a higher turnout than anticipated, which made us busier than expected. However, we managed this challenge perfectly, and I am incredibly proud of our team.
The only unfortunate incident was a brief period of light rain and strong wind. Luckily, the rain subsided after a while. This event held significant meaning for us. It not only tested our spirit of service but also improved our practical skills and friendliness. I am thrilled to have learned so much from this volunteer activity.
