On Saturday, June 17, from 9:30 to 12:00 the Roslyn branch volunteered at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum.
At the Friendship Garden in the Bayard Cutting Arboretum, we mainly focused on the removal of invasive species such as mugwort, porcelain berries and phragmites. In the springtime the rain has helped the invasive plants grow uncontrollably, which took over the space of native plants in the garden. By regularly extracting the weeds we are giving back more space to hopefully reach the goal of minimal maintenance in the future. We pulled out buckets and buckets of invasive plants. Some roots of the invasive plants were long and hard to pull out by hand so we used tools. We also helped to transport buckets of weeds onto trucks for composting.
Today’s work was a little challenging because it was hard to identify the invasives from the native plants. We didn’t want to remove any plants we wanted to protect and a lot of plants looked very alike. We also had to watch out for ticks and poison ivy in our surroundings.
