The Houston Food Bank is America’s largest food bank in distribution leading hunger relief in 18 southeast Texas counties. They work with the Texas Department of Agriculture to serve the public through the Emergency Food Assistance Program and distribute fresh produce, meat and nonperishables and prepare nutritious hot meals for kids in our state. Furthermore, they have two locations across Houston.
Volunteers on Sunday helped in the Prep Room, where they worked together to package surplus food from independent donors, grocery stores, and restaurant pantries into boxes to provide meals to low-income communities and other eligible individuals.
From 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, volunteers from AYLUS Bellaire branch worked on transferring over three tons of rice and lentils into boxes. During the volunteering time, volunteers were either filling up, sealing, or packaging bags of lentils and rice into boxes to be ready for shipment to their respective locations elsewhere. At the end, they cleaned the working area and the Food Bank Staff calculated the final results of the volunteers’ hard work. Along with other volunteering organizations, they prepared 3 pallets of boxes for shipment, equal to 240 boxes of nearly 3,840 pounds of food or 3,200 meals.
