On Saturday, June 3rd from 9:30am-12:30, the Roslyn branch members volunteered at Bethpage State Park to help get rid of invasive plants.
Invasive plants happen to be one of the biggest threats in our environment. While the sweet pepper bushes are native, they have been taken over by surrounding invasive plants such as the mugwort. These nonnative plants happen to grow anywhere because they don’t have any natural predators or competition around the area. Pulling the roots out will weaken the nonnative plants in hopes to keep them away.
Working around the sweet pepper bushes, we pulled out most of the mugwort and left them in piles on the side to be carried and transported. We also used rakes to clean up any remaining leaves, sticks or weeds around the shrubs.
