On April 22, 2023 the Roslyn Branch work with Audubon to remove invasive plants and lay mulch over a garden.
For the first hour, we worked to remove an invasive species of grass that was covering the garden. Some parts of the soil was loose so it was easy to pull out the grass with the roots attached. In other parts, the soil was more compacted together so we used tools such as shovels to loosen it up to help remove the roots. Some of the invasive grass we removed were tangled and grown amongst other plants that are good for the land. Sometimes the fallen leaves in the ground covered the grass. In those circumstances, getting rid of the invasive was difficult and we had to gently remove them stalk by stalk.
For the second hour, we laid mulch on the soil. Mulch is a mixture of wood chips and help with the water retention in soil and lessens soil erosion. We loaded wheelbarrows with mulch and spread them over the ground. Using rakes, we smoothed them across the soil evenly and made sure no patches of dirt was left exposed.
